Why does my Air Conditioner only blow cold air for a short time?

Question:It is a window A/C. It will blow cold air for maybe 20 minutes, the room will get comfortable, then it will blow room temperature air after that. The A/C unit is older, maybe 15 years old or so.

Answers:
Before you give up on your window ac , try giving it a good cleaning. If it has a removable filter, replace with new. If it is so old that you can no longer find filter to fit, they maybe you can basterize one that looks like it will fit. Take apart as much as it allows, putting like screws together in one of those empty medicine containers. Check out thernastat for any loose dirt. Window fans are notarious for getting dirt stuck in all places. In theromstat are see if there is a needle pointing to some numbers. (like 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, etc up to 5.0 Those numbers are the timing for how long one must wait for temp to start & stop) IE: you set temp for 72 degrees which means unit must stop at 72, but those little numbers are to tell the thermostat when to turn fan ON if temp fall below or rises above the desired temp of 72 deg.

I would give this thing a good cleaning job, take your time, keep track of part by drawing a diagram or writing down everything you take apart and how it came out so you can install it again.

Adjust thermostat if you can, blow out dust, use paint brush to clean coils, and put it back together, but make sure you have no parts left over and one last thing, check out cord as it is inside of case. If worn replace it with a new cord and a new plug. Slap the whole thing back together and plug in. Hopefully, all it needed was tender loving care and a good clean out.

uh dude, i think you need a new a/c. you should be happy it's still blowing a little cold air, i only have a ****** fan
It's probably on it's way out.I suggest you invest in a new fan!
Have you tryed cleaning it? It probably is getting frozen over from lack of air running thru.
its about time for you to purchase a new air con because having your old air con repaired will costs you a lot and the technology before is not yet advanced so practically older units consume more power than new models
it could be set on low where it's on automatic shut off to save energy.

check the filter.
it may only need service maintenance. some A/C can last up to 20 or 25 yrs.

good luck and keep cool... :)
if it runs for 20min and just blow room air after that it is probably because after 20 min your set temperature has been satisfied. some window units are set so the fan runs continuously.so what is going is your a/c is cycling on and off as it should and your fan is on continuously.that is normal however there should be a setting on your dial that says continuous fan or fan on or a button that says economy every manufacturer does something different but if read the dials you should be able to figure it out
Th problem most likely sounds like poor airflow across the evaporator. This can be caused by anything like dirty filters or obstruction of the return vent. If you were that short on refrigerant it wouldnt cool at all. Check to see if the evaporator (coil behind the filter) is icing up. That would explain the change in refrigeration effect. If your compressor runs the whole time and this situation exists, you have an airflow problem. Clean the evaporator as well as the filters. Some strong (good smelling too-this will be cirualted throughout the house) household spray cleaner on the evaporator will do nicely.

If this problem persists, you may be short-cycliing the cool air. This means the cold air being pumped out is being sucked back in. This also occurs if the room has made temp and the AC continues to run. Many people think that AC's are meant to have icicles hanging off your nose. This is wrong, it will damage your unit and ultimately cause its demise.

Your room is supposed to be comfortable, not a meat locker.

Try all these things and if it still persists and you're really, really attached to that AC, call in a pro to look at it. Just like everyone before me has said, it would be cheaper to replace it.
