How do I fix a broken bath plug?

Question:Okay, so I have a lever that you either lift up or down to plug the drain (located below the faucet for the bath). Uuumm...for some reason it hasn't been working and well, I took out the two screws and found the reason, but in testing it and pulling on it ...I accidentally pulled the whole plug out...is there any way I can fix this? Water still drains for the tub and shower, but it drains slowly now. Did I break it? Help please. Thank you.

Answers:
If I follow you right, the plunger is still in the overflow? Just not completely down and stop the drain flow completely.

It broke off the trip lever, right?

If so, I have used a closet auger to fish it out. Old plumbers trick taught to me by an 'old plumber'.

Rangedog sounds like a good man to follow in these plumbing questions. He has learned a lot in his trade during the last 35 years.
I'm an electrician since 1970, but am still learning things from other tradesmen of all trades.
