Question about our sump pump running hard?
Question:We are new to sump pumps... this is our first house that we bought... yes, we had a home inspector and all was peachy but now, the sump pump that used to be so quiet... is now been running really really hard and quite noisy... it sounds as if a jackhammer is in the basement and it wakes up everyone in the house at night. We noticed water in the closet... and loked around and noticed water was shoting up from the sump pump afterwe removed the cover. The pump runs so hard it loosens the pipes and they come loose and water sprays everywhere.. we re tightened the clamps AGAIN and the pump still runs very very hard it jerks the pipes untill they come loose. the pump kicks on about once every morning a every now and then once during the day on a rainy day. Help! Why is the pump running hard it never used to do that. Is it because it needs to be replaced? Is there a certain maintenence to do with them? We know absolutely nothing about them.
Answers:
Replace the pump with a submersible type...You can get a quality one for $150. This is guaranteed to run head ache free for at least 5 years. Good return on investment. PS Very easy to install.
NORMALLY, motors (a pump is turned by a motor) and the things they turn vibrate when they are out of balance. (Guys who know about these things will say "Duh".) It's likely that the pump has lost an impeller and so vibrates and runs rough. It's possible to determine that by a bit of disassembly. Most likely, it's time for a new pump. www.grainger.com has them as do other supply houses (depends on whether they are commonly used in your area).
Time for a replacement without any need to investigate. Repair would be as expensive as replacement.
