First, keep in mind that all shingles fade and change color a bit with time, so the shingles you patch in will not match.
You will need to replace whole shingles, not just pieces. At the edges of the roof, you can use pieces the same size as the original, but cut it a bit longer and trim with a utility knife after it is nailed back in place.
First, you will need to remove the damaged shingle(s). Use a stiff putty knife or flat pry bar to carefully lift the tabs of the shingles that are laying directly above the damaged shingle. These will be glued down, try to cut through the adhesive instead of pulling it off of the shingle.
After the shingles immediately above are loose, move up one row and pull up the tabs there as well using the same method. With the tabs lifted, you should see the heads of the roofing nails holding the shingle below down. Use a nail puller to remove the nails that are directly above the damaged shingle in both rows.
At this point, you should have all of the nails that go through the damaged shingle removed. Loosen the tabs on the damaged shingle and slide it out.
Now work the other way. Slide the new shingle in place. Replace the nails that you just removed with the same size galvanized roofing nails (probably 1 1/4" - 1 1/2"). Do not use the same holes, move to the left or the right just a bit. Do not move up or down.
Use roof cement (the kind in caulking tubes works best) to fill the old nail holes and seal the tabs that you pulled loose back down.
Take precautions not to fall, but other than that not a difficult job.
