Why are screws coming out of my ceiling?
Question:I just moved into an apartment and I am have witnessed paint chips on the floor. I look up at my ceiling and I can see that screws are extruding through the paint and are popping out of the ceiling. I called maintance they came by and supposely fixed them but the screws began to pop out in other areas. Do anyone know why screws are coming out of my ceiling?
Answers:
Are you located close to a train track, or is heavy equipment operating close by? Vibrations around your home can cause this type of problem. I think these are nails, and should be replaced by screws. Your maintenance should be fixing this, not you! Good luck!
many people are troubled by loose screws
wow, next time, put them back in yourself with a little bit larger screw dipped in some liquid nails, if they fall out after that, there is a serious problem.
i hate to tell ya, but it sounds like your apt is a dump. you shouldn't have screws coming out of your ceiling. it sounds like they covered your ceiling with some type of cheap covering, and the covering is coming off. god knows what the real ceiling is like.
the only other explanation for screws coming out of your ceiling is that your neighbor upstairs has screwed something to their floor and its coming through your ceiling. that's not good either.
These are known as "nail pops." See the reference below for info on how to take care of them.
They are probably nails not screws and are popping out of the drywall. Be sure the nails are into the joist, reset them and spackle over and repaint the area. Or replace the nails with drywall screws - be sure you are screwing into the joist.
The root cause is moisture. You can fix the loose fasteners till the cows come home, but if you don't fix the problem it will continue to raise it's ugly head.
your driwall is probly shrinking, so the nails are "popping out"
The sheetrock is not pushed tightly up to the ceiling joists. The drywall screws are not designed to force tight the sheetrock to the framing, but only to be installed just past flush on the paper face. The ceiling is now "floating" and movement causes the "mud" to come out of the screw dimples. The only way to fix is to re-screw or nail up tight, using hand and arm to hold sheetrock tight. You are going to create new pops anywhere the ceiling is loose. This is what you want. Once you have finished, you can re-mud the screw holes and texture or paint to match.
