There is ice on the line and joint to my home a/c unit. Can I fix it myself and how much to replace the freon?

Low refrigerant is one of the last things the pro's will check.
Other causes of frosting on the line are low air flow over the evaporator coil (in the air handler inside your home).
Outside air temperature is lower than inside air temperature.
Clogged filter.
Clogged indoor coil
Fan not running on Hi speed.
If you check these items and none are the culprit, contact a reputable service company and have them leak-check your A/C.

THE ICE ON THE LINE MEANS IT IS FREEZING UP, WHICH MEANS YOU NEED MORE FREON, AND YOU CANT DO IT BY YOURSELF YOU HAVE TO HAVE A LICENSE TO GET THE FREON AND THE EQUIPMENT TO DO IT WITH
Is your unit cooling o.k. or is it freezing up? If it is running fine it may be from the humidity. If it's freezing up, most of the time this means you are a little low on freon. You may have a small leak, but you can't fix this because you have federal regulations that require you to recover the freon. You will have to get a professional to do this for you, unless you have your EPA license. The cost would depend on the area you are in, but count on spending around $100-150 for a service call and a pound or so of freon. Most issues with an air conditioner are best left to the professionals. If you do work on it a mess it up, then they get to charge alot more to fix it!
