My heat pump just started making a very loud, screeching noise?

Question:I turned off the A/C, and I think the noise was coming from the fan. When I went to turn it on again, it would not come on. The heat pump has been kept very clean and is only 3 1/2 years old. It is a Heil 10 seer, 3 ton unit. It is under warranty, but I would like an idea of what happened.

Answers:
you probably have a bearing going out. turn it off and call a technician. you could make it worse by running it.

Are you referring to the inside or outside portion of your heat pump? The inside unit only consists of a fan that could make that kind of noise and is usually caused from the bearings on the motor locking up. The outside unit, on the other hand, has a fan and a compressor. Either of these could have caused this noise. The fan usually makes this noise for the same reason the inside fan does, bearings. The compressor could also make the noise, but for several different reasons, none of which are good. Hope this answers your question.
your condenser fan is shot. Kill power, take off the bolts that hold the top on, and remover with the motor attached. Flip it upside-down and remove the wires (it may be a plug or wires you have to cut and splice) Remove the 4 nuts holding the motor on and be prepare to replace them because they will most likely snap when you turn them. (it ALWAYS happens) Go to Johnstone or Grainger and get a new motor and fan blade. Put it all back together and make sure the wires are either wire nutted together or plugged in firmly.

Restore power and test.

I just saved you hundreds
screaching or squeeling generally implies metal against metal in a constant motion. I am inclined to think of the metal from a rotating motor shaft or the bushings / bearings about it.
Good luck going to Grainger or Johnstone. They are business to business wholesale outfits. If its under warranty then this is not a job for the homeowner. The manufacturer will want the new motor installed by a qualified tech. It sucks but your probably going to be on the hook for labor, and if you install it you will probably void any warranty on the product.
