Mice - finding dead mice in the house?

Question:This week we have found 2 dead mice in the basement, 2 days apart. What could be causing this? We do not put out any poisons. I can not think of, or find anything that we keep in the basement that they might be eating that might cause this either. And no, we do not have any pets like a cat that might have done this.

Answers:
huunger or disease

Maybe it was just their time to die.
Who knows. Could be that someone outside has put poisoned seed out and they ate it. The seed is not immediate, they got in your house, poison took hold of them and they died.
maybe they couldn't find anything to eat in your basement so they died?
do you have a gas line in your house? you may want to check that too.
best thing to do too is call an exterminator. Good luck! mice or no fun!
The mice could have been poisoned someplace else and came to your basement to die. D-Con is something where the mice eat the pellet, then die later. I am relatively sure that they at least feel ill...so it is very possible the seek someplace they would be more comfortable to die.

Realistically, how the mice died is not as relevant as how they got into the house in the first place. Check the perimiter of the house for gaps, pay close attention to holes in the foundation for basement windows, AC lines, utilities, exterior faucets, etc. Seal any cracks or gaps with expanding foam insulation. Check your door bottoms. Fix these, then set simple mousetraps baited with peanut butter or something similar. Don't forget to check them every two or three days after you set them.

PS: after you rid yourself of the mice, have your furnace and water heater checked for Carbon Monoxide leaks. Small animals can perish quickly in toxic gas environments. I only bring this up because if the mice were just there playing and died from gas poisioning...it would be good to know.
