I am thinking that it hums pretty significantly but it just starts to operate and suddenly it goes right back to the humming state. Does this sound appropriate?
If that is about what is taking place then I have to think it is the motor brushes. I say this because they will enable the shaft to rotate, but if they are worn dramatically then it will not rotate. However, on occasion it might move so slightly it cannot be detected, and it hits a spot what contact is made so it begins to rotate. Just as it does it loses contact again and is back to the state of humming because contact is no longer being made.
Solution would be to replace the brushes. On the other hand the motor might have bit the dust altogether and you'll have to replace it.
Have it looked at is the only solution here.
Drain the water from the jacuzzi. Remove the flexible pipes from the pump that the motor turns.Remove the pump from the motor. Take the motor to the nearest electric motor rebuilder or spa seller and ask them to test it. *NOTE* An automobile alternator and starter rebuilder MAY be able to test it as well. Even if the motor's voltage is different, the principles that motors operate on are identical, with the exception of a capacitor started motor that is. It is VERY likely that your motor is "burned up," and if that is the case it'll cost around $200 to replace it.
