Is our central air conditioner working properly?
Question:Our unit is brand new and we have a brand new house. We have central air for the first time. We have the program set at 20.5. The current temp is 20.8 and it has been at that temp for the past 3 hours, also the fan hasn't shut off at all. Does this mean that the a/c unit itself has been running all that time and if so is this normal? My husband thinks that the unit itself is running non-stop which is concerning him.
TIA
Answers:
which fan.. inside or outside.. if outside fan is running then yes your using ac. if its the inside fan running then you are just circulating inside air. kinda helps on reducing hot places but will cause the elec. bill to go up. it also filters the inside air. dont forget to replace your air filter often. flip your switch from on to auto
First make sure the fan is set to auto, not on or it will run all the time. If it is in the on position, the fan will run constantly, but the A/C will kick on and off as needed. The other problem could be either it's not cooling properly or it is very hot outside. A/C units can only cool the house no more than 20 to 25 degrees F (you'll have to do the conversion) below the outside ambient temperature.
i have had this same worry before, but experience has taught me that when you first turn on your c/a that it will run for several hours until the humidity is out of your house. nothing to worry about. lol with the new house.
check to make sure you have the cool setting on and auto for the fan setting. Is cold air coming out of the registers? Set the thermostat a little lower and see what happens..also try a little higher after checking you settings...good luck and stay cool...summer has just begun!
One other thing that can mess up a program is if the Humidistat is set too high. If your house has one it will be separate from the thermostat. The best setting is to set it at it's lowest setting which is just immediately after turning it on and backing it down to just before turning the dial off.
Another thing you can look at is one of a couple of capacitors might have gone bad. Its just a matter of finding which one. They can cause the problems you are experiencing now.
Contact your builder and/or the contractor who installed the Unit and stand on his eyelids until he or they fix it!
When dealing with air conditioning there can be many different answers for one particular symptom. In your case from the information that I have, it would tell me that you still need to come down .3 of a degree to satisfy the thermostat, in turn shutting off the A/C.
Anyone who keeps there place at 20.5 degree's likes a cold house. There could be many different reasons why your house won't cool down enough to satisfy the thermostat.
Here are some common ones
dirty air filter
undersized air conditioner
undercharged air conditioner
location of thermostat
Large south facing windows will also keep your house warmer and make it hard to keep cool.
Turn the fan switch from "ON" to "AUTO" if you want, but it is O.K. to run the fan (set at low speed on the furnace wiring) all the time to keep the house from playing catch up all the time. You will have a more even cooling as well if you adjust your vents, to suck the high hot air (reduce the lower return air) and send the cool air where it is needed most (close the basement supply vents).
