Answers:
A pilot light is probably burned out. Take a look and re light it and you are back in business
How are you lighting it? Does it have an electric start or are you just lighting it with a match?
If it has an electric start, then yes, it can happen as it takes a couple seconds for it to light and some gas will escape before it sparks. If you're lighting it by hand, you might be doing it incorrectly. When you have to light a stove by hand, always strike the match BEFORE turning the gas on. Have the match right by the burner when you turn the gas on. That way less gas escapes. That way you'll decrease the likelihood of getting burned if the flame manages to flash and burn the escaped gas. If you're using the electric start, always stand with your body at least a foot from the stove with no body parts near the burner. Never light anything if you smell gas when the gas isn't on. If you smell gas, stay out of the house and call someone from the gas company out to shut it off.
Yes for a minute but if you continue to smell it shut it off! because you might have a leak. It should go away after it is lit. Hope this helps.
