Which way is forward/clockwise on a ceiling fan?

Question:I say the switch s/b down for forward/clockwise position in the summer and up for vice-versa in the winter. My husband disagrees... plz help! This came about from a "Honey do tip" in the newpaper... it says: forward mode, blades turn clockwise and blow air down. Reverse causes warm ceiling air to be pushed down...BUT, it doesn't tell which way to position the switch for forward or reverse. So our argument begins. For many yrs I have put the switch down for summer and up for winter. What do you think? I still say I am right. =)

Answers:
you are right ...swich down in summer to blow breeze on you ...up in winter to move the air around without an uncomfortable breeze...

Down switch blows down. Blow warm air down in winter and lift cold air up in summer.

In my opinion, you should just leave it off. It uses too much electrical power for the benefits that ceiling fans purport to give.
When in doubt. Turn fan on, stand under it - - feel if air blowing on you. Shut off fan, flip switch, repeat. Do BOTH directions with both of you involved in experiment when it is to solve an argument and not only one direction for your answer.

Heat goes up so fan should be blowing the heat down or back in your living space in winter. Since cold settles or falls, fan should be sucking air upward for summer.
i have to agree with bricky, thats what i do and i think it`s right
To decide which is clockwise on a fan stand under it and look up and pretend you see the face of a clock, then move the blades so they move forward like the hands of a clock.
