Noisy condo neeighbors?
Question:The condo upstairs from me has hard wood floors up there. The problem with that is it makes it extremely loud in my condo. I have talked to them about it & they are totally ignorant to my request. Now coming into condos I expect noises from your neighbors but this is not normal sounds. I have lived for 13 years & I would move out but I can"t afford to. This lasts from the moment they first get up till they go to bed. I work at night so I have to sleep during the day, that really is not the point though. Even if I was not sleeping the sound is so irritating that no person could even live & enjoy it. All this has not just started it has been going on for a little over a year. My question is this, I know it is during the day but don't I have the right to peace & quiet in my own home? Can I get the police involved or will it make even worse? Not everyone has the same schedule & all I ask is for a little respect.
Answers:
Most governing documents will not allow hardwood floors above the first floor, or only allow them with certain types of insulation so they do not disturb neighbors below.
If your neighbors did not get the approval required in your declaration and/or they did not properly insulate them, the owner will have to remove the flooring. You should not have to pay for this, it should be something the Association should get involved in.
Go through your declaration (CC&Rs). Find the restrictions (there might be something about flooring, something else about changes allowed, and something else about how to get permission to make changes). From this, write a letter to your Board. Give them 30 days to rectify the situation or you will get an attorney.
No, you do not have to live in this situation! Good luck!
Tough decision. If you call the police, and they talk to them, will it get worse with retribution? Also, they probably think that they aren't making a lot of noise.
I see no easy answer here. You may be able to sleep better if you can get used to sleeping with music on the radio. Or you could try turning on a TV to no channel and listen to the "white noise". I have used the "white noise" trick in noisy hotels with some success.
I wish you sincere good luck with this. I know how difficult it is to function with little or no sleep.
It seems to me that the group you need to involve is your homeowner's association. Presumably you have a clause that says what you can and can't do with your home, and I'm sure being noisy or installing something that causes lots of noise is not going to be allowed.
Good luck.
do what most union workers do at work (sleep) and get paid that way you can stay awake with your rude neighbors. maybe join them and party with them, get drunk with them so what you go to work and sleep. this a great country or what.
I'm not really clear on the problem here. Is it the floors above making noise, or the neighbors themselves? If it's the floors making noise, then most likely it is the sub-floor (beneath the wood floors) that are the problem. In order to fix that you have to pull up the floors that are currently there. If it's the neighbors themselves being loud I would contact your homeowner's association or the police. If it's a loud party, really loud music, yelling, etc. I would contact the police... but for other things I would contact the homeowner's association.
