Cedar siding needs caulked and painted around edges, Do I buy colored caulk or paint then apply clear caulk?

The general point of cedar is that you aren't supposed to paint it. Most that do paint it regret it when the oils in the wood make the paint peel.

Anyway, if you must caulk, use clear silicone, then use a good brand of deck prep followed by deck sealer sprayed on the siding.

If this has never been done before and the siding is more than 5 years old you'll need to apply the sealer twice this year, then twice next year, then once a year after that. it isn't as horrible and difficult as you might think, just use a sprayer like you would use for insecticide, and don't worry about runs since the sealer soaks in and the heavy spots disappear.
