Good for you and thank you for wanting to help our world.
I would recommend that you first contact your utility company to schedule an energy audit. They have lots of gadgets to check how much air is escaping from your home via doorways, windows and walls. They will check your heating and cooling system and appliances to see what is using the most energy and make recommendations as to what should be fixed or replaced etc. It is free. National Grid, My energy star.com and Nstar are some.
You can also check out the web site www.HGTVPro.com for information. Look at the type of insulation and the installation Types of flooring, plumbing and solar issues are discussed. I don't know if you are doing any remodeling but you can find out about choices of which products to use. There is also another site, www.lime.com.
If you have gas heat for example, a tankless water heater conserves more energy and you don't want a tank to small as you would run out of hot water and you don't want one too big as to continuously heat it. You need to calculate the size for your home then choose one that has the highest energy efficiency rating. You could then look at your refridgerator and washing machine for ratings. There are so many ways.
Planting trees to provide shade in the summer and also protect your home from the cold if you are in a cold climate
Good luck, I hope this helps.
