Air conditioner stayed on balcony all winter, still good?

Question:It was covered with a tarp .. well shower curtain, however the curtain flew off and exposed the air conditioner to rain a few times. Is it safe to plug it in now that it is dry?

It's a 12000 BTU pretty old air conditioner. But it worked fine.

Answers:
That depends on what type of air conditioner it is. If it is what I suspect as being known as a "window" A/C and it was left inside it's sleeve there is no concern. If it was the latter and it was exposed then there is only a little concern that rain has penetrated the electrical parts. I do not think you should be worried.
Plug the machine into a power point and run it. If there is an electrical fault you will be ok as your home will trip a circuit breaker or short a fuse, each of which are not a problem to repair. I only say this as I believe you will not have a problem and you will be safe :) Sometimes there is no other alternative but to bite the bullet and flick that switch.
The choice is yours, but after all other avenues are covered (ie it is dry,it seems no parts are rusted immovably, there are adequate electrical safety devices in your home) I would not throw a perfectly good A/C out in your case.

A window A/C should stand up to weather just fine.
just make sure that the coils are clean, the wiring hasn't been degraded and the controls are free from debris and dry, and it should be ok.
