How to paint a metal roof?
Question:We have recently bought an older house. It has a metal roof that looks as if it was previously painted. It needs to be redone. Would we sand it first? Does it have primer, and then different colors of paint to choose from? Where do we start?
Answers:
the best metal primer that would endure harsh weather conditions is RustSeal made by KBS Coatings. It's best applied to bare metal of course for the ultimate rust protection, but if you can sand down the roof to remove loose flakey rust & paint, then wash it clean & prep it, Rustseal will stick well. They have about 7-8 colors to choose from. Pick a color associated primer that will Topcoat easy for you.
at the paint shop they will advise you!
If the current roof is unpainted metal but rusty, you will have to repair any holes first. Then you can paint it with an Alum Coating that is made for same. You can purchase the best of these at a Roofing Materials Distributor ( check your local Yellow Pages). One of the best for this is made by Karnak Chemical Corp. Ask for it by name.
Use a wire brush to get any loose paint and rust off of the metal before painting it, then buy paint that's recommended for that particular type of application.
