What's the best way to cancel noises created by neighbors re-modelling their
apartments with power drills?
Question:The building I live in hosts 70 apartments. When one neighbor finishes redoing their apartment another one starts. When they use power drills the sound level goes over 100db.
I work night shifts so I can only sleep during the day when they are allowed to make this kind of noise.
I was wondering if there are any gadgets that can help with my problem. I heard some things about white noise generators, would they do the trick?
Answers:
Use a fan. (but sometimes I havn't heard my alarm clock )
Going under water helps too. LOL
A white noise generator might work, but I would imagine that the drilling is random enough that it might still bother you. You could try noise cancel ling headphones. Make sure you buy a model that has Active Noise Cancellation. The drawback to this is that you will have to sleep on your back to prevent crushing your ears.
The most basic option are earplugs. You can go to the drugstore and buy the basic model, or you can go to an Audiologist and have a pair of custom fitted ear plugs made.
I used to work nights and I know how tough getting good sleep can be. You also should make your room as dark as possible, use blackout shades or a sleep mask. This will help you get more restful sleep as well.

You're right, the only solution is to counteract the disturbing noise with your own disturbing noise.
But, let's be realistic here...you need to sleep, and to sleep you need quiet, not more noise.
Probably the best solution is to somehow block the noise going into your ears using earplugs or wearing headphones with some soothing music playing but, it might be hard to get used to wearing something on your head while trying to fall asleep.
As long as the noisemakers are working during the "legal" hours...
what? 6 a.m. - 10 a.m.? something like that?
then, not much you can do about the source, they're not going to turn off their power tools just so you can sleep.
I had the same problem, very similar only it was a meticulous neighbor with a large lawn out side the apartment I lived in. He ran his mower hours on end, then the weed whacker then the leaf blower. Summer we had no ac, windows had to be open. They had eight...yes eight children ,Their play yard was right outside our bedroom window. I bought a big box fan, that I ran on high, sort of a continuous white noise sound that was soothing and covered the outside noises to a suffer able level. I wore earplugs as well. The difference was marvelous.
Since I worked nights all seasons for many years and winter was snowblower and children shreiking in snowball fights. I ran the fan any way ,as a floor fan, just directed its air into the closet.
