What else do I need to convert a dryer from 3-prong to 4-prong?
Question:I just moved to a very new apartment building and my eight year old dryer has a 3-prong 3-wire cord. The apartment plug is 4-prong.
I bought a 4-prong cord at Home Depot, but the maintenance guy says it won't work because it's 4-wire. There were not any 4-prong 3-wire cords for sale.
This dryer has been converted before to a 4-prong, but then converted back to a 3-prong with the other cord thrown out in the process.
What am I supposed to buy to make this work again?
Answers:
all you have to do is remove the jumper from the center terminal if it is still there...what this done is connected the frame of your machine to the ground of the cord.when you put the four prong cord on the machine it basically connects the same way the three prong cord did but the green wire on the cord mounts on the frame of your machine and not to the terminals where the other wires connect to the dryer...any 4 prong cord that will fit your plugin will work
if you bought the 4 prong cord, that should all you need. along with a phillips screwdriver, nutdriver, wirecutters, splicer, and possibly a standard screwdriver.
now as the other poster advised its in the wiring up of the unit now. he described the sequence of wiring, however it appears you will need a qualified technician or electrician. please call one to do the work, especially if your unsure.
SAFETY FIRST.
