My push mower is sputering and blowing black smoke, why?

Black smoke indicates flooding from the carb.
There are several things that can cause this.
1. Trash in the needle seat located in the carb.
2. Clogged Filter
Could be an air filter that's getting clogged.
If you added to much oil it will cause the mower to smoke and be hard to start. Check the oil and make sure it is at the proper level
The carburator needs cleaning. Check the fuel tank to be sure it is clean. Remove and clean the carb.
Well if your piston rings and cylinder are still good then its gotta be one of three things:
1) Clogged Air Filter - Either its full of grass and dirt or ya tipped it the wrong way and it got loaded with oil. Go to Home Depot and buy a new one.
2) Overfilled with oil - and its gettin pumped into the cylinder Drain it exactly to the FULL mark on the dipstick.
3) Carb Is Gummed up (most likely) - if its been sitting for long periods with gas in it then it may have gone stale. Or it may have contamination in the tank / lines that clogged the carb. Bring you mower into the local MTD repair shop and they'll take care of it for you.

what did you do to it before this happened? did you turn it on it's side to clean under the cutting deck? doing so could cause oil and gas to get in the carb, and enough of it could clog the air filter. so could too much oil in the engine. did you put the wrong gas in it? could you have put in pre mixed gas for a two stroke(oil and gas mixed)? to help you solve the problem you should give us as much detail as possible, what you have done to it, how long has it been doing this, or did it just suddenly start, etc. add to your post or post again.

Black smoke can indicate an over rich fuel/air ratio (not enough air). Possible cause is dirty air cleaner element.
If you had the mower on its side recently, you could be seeing oil smoke. Just check the oil level and let it burn off.
