What are effective ways of lowering my pool alkalinity, and ultimately maintaining a slightly lower pH?
Question:Currently, my pool has slightly elevated pH levels (about 7.8, so not out of range--but could be slightly lower). My alkalinity, however, was off the charts--at 280. Now it is 210. My problem, of course, is that while acid lowers the Alkalnity and pH, in order to bring pH back up to the 7.5-7.6 range, I need soda ash, which also increases alkalnity?
My guess is it is a back and forth game that will slowly bring my alkalnity level down, while balancing my pH. Any specific suggestions?
Answers:
Use muriatic acid to lower the alkalinity and pH then use 20 Mule Team Borax to bring the pH back up without influencing the alkalinity.
Don't do the slow game though. Doing this will increase costs of various other chemicals. Add enough muriatic acid to lower the alkalinity (about a half gallon per 10,000 gallons of pool water) and concentrate only on lowering the alkalinity. Once this is 90-150 (vinyl pools at 110-150, concrete/plaster pools at 90-120) then adjust your pH up with the borax.
Yes, it is a guessing game. but over time you will learn.
You are adding too much acid to the water which adjusts the pH too low. All the while you must maintain the correct cholorine level as well. The pH aids the cholorine in doing its job.
Add the acid in smaller amounts and wait 1/2 hour to recheck. If needed add a little more until it is adjusted. Then use a stabilizer for the water.
If you drain and refill the pool with public water, it should lower the alkalinity and will only modestly effect the pH. However, keep in mind that the alkalinity will decrease due to reactions of carbonate with acid to form CO2 which then goes into the air. If you're experiencing bright sunny days, I would recommend adding just a small amount of acid and let the sunlight do the rest. As the alkalinity is converted to CO2 the pH will rise back up.
I know it sounds silly, but
