Gas Self Propelled Toro: Stalls when hot?
Question:Hello - this only happens on hot days. About 10 minutes in, it stalls. The rope pulls easy enough afterward, but we can't get it restarted until the engine cools off again. On cool days the thing will run for the entire tank of gas. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Maybe it needs oil.
Check and make sure that the oil is not low. You may also want to remove the air filter and clean it. Try washing it thoroughly with soap and water and then drying it adequately.
I would change the oil filter and oil. You may be low on oil, or the oil aint getting through the filter.
Check the gap on the points. Coil cracked?
The spark module could be failing under HOT conditions. Next time it stalls test the spark by removing the plug (careful it's hot!)have the wire connected to it and have the plug touching the engine. Pull the rope and if you have a spark, My apologies because you would have just proved me wrong! LOL
IF there is no spark, replace the coil module. Use an Air Gap Guage, or like me use an old business card between the coil and flywheel to get the correct gap.
Try giving the engine a good cleaning. Especially inbetween the cooling fins. Seal off the air intake and the muffler openings and use a good quality engine cleaner, like the ones used for automobiles. Just follow the directions on the can.
Aslo, clean the drive system and lube as required. Check for any binding in the mechanism.
Just a note of caution, folks, when checking for spark with a connected plug grounded to the engine block. Keep well clear of the sparkplug hole. The fuel charge pulled into the cylinder when you rotate the engine will be expelled from the cylinder on the compression stroke and can be detonated in your face. One time was enough for me. Better to loosely screw a spare sparkplug into the hole. Heckuva way to find out you do have spark, eh?
