How to wire 220v on a 1950 pushmatic?
Question:i had an air conditioning unit installed yesterday but it did not include the electric connection... i have three empty spaces in my breaker box wich is a 1950's bulldog pushmatic. i am pretty familiar with running the line and i can connect everything from the compressor back to the box it is just the box that i don't know well. What type of breakers do i need? where do i need to add them in the box? what would be the best wire for this job?
Answers:
You need to have 2 spaces free on the same side of the panel together , next you need get the breaker from a electrical supply store they may need to order it for you tell them the panel you have (Bull dog pushmatic) and you need a 2 pole breaker and the amperage you need make sure it matches the wire size you ran and the correct amps for the unit ( #10-30 amps, # 8 - 40amps, #6-50 amps) this is for (copper only) You want to use 2 wire romex , this has 2 hots and a ground that is all you need you dont need a neutral .
Make sure when you hook up the breaker to the panel you turn off the main because you usually bolt down those type of breakers. Be prepared the breaker is very expensive. And make sure you put a disconnect switch out at the unit this is code .
Good luck
Any ? feel free to email me
The best thing to do is to replace or at least add a "modern breaker box. If you spent the money for a new A.C., you should be able to afford a new breaker box. It doesn't have to be a big or expensive one... Just do it!
