What could be the problem?

Question:i have a window a/c and it will not blow any air and it makes a hum (whinning) sound? i think it may need free-on

The fan is probably frozen. You need to open the case and just turn the fan to get it going again.

you are suppose to plug in the unit and let it set in the off position for 24 hours before it is turned on.

The fan motor is frozen up you may be able to take the cover off the unit and turn the fan by hand while applying oil on the round shaft going into the motor (unplug the unit before you do anything) this may work for awhile more then likely you will need to replace the motor.
