My boiler continually needs re-setting - HELP !?
Question:My boiler continually needs re-setting and occasionally I get loud 'thumping' noises coming from it, along with the fact we HAVE to have the central heating on to have hot water (and vice-versa) - no fun in these summer months believe me!! What's wrong - can anyone help?

As the boiler comes on i would have to say that the boiler sounds like it works.
What you have is a circulation problem, either the pump is not working. If this is not the problem then either check the small header tank in the loft to see if there is water in there. If not usually the ball valve is stuck and needs the ball float bit pushed down to get the water to fill the system.
Alternatively check the pressure on the pressure gauge, the needle should be between 1 & 2 bar. Afterwoods go round and bleed the radiators to get the air out.
By the sound of it, the thumping noises you here may be the boiler kettleing and it over heats which is why you have to reset it. You may have to get the heating system flushed.
what make is it? There were some major problems with a certain type of boiler htat was highlighted by watchdog. Visit their website www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog to see if its yours
Sounds like our boiler - is it a megaflow? We have to reset ours about once a week, the overflow drips all the time and we have the banging as well! I've got a number for a megaflow engineer if you need it?
Hot water heating is probably the most efficient way possible to heat your house in the winter, but that efficiency brings with it...problems. It sounds to me like the boiler itself is air bound. When that happens the boiler shuts down because a safety sensor is telling the boiler it's low on water. If this really was the case, and you didn't have this safety device you could be looking at a very serious situation such as a fire.
What you need to do is fire up the boiler then go to every radiator in the house and bleed the air from it.
Bear in mind when you do this the escaping air, steam and water will be extremely hot and can cause serious burns it you're not careful. When you open the bleed valve on the radiator open it slowly until you hear air escaping. When this stops, or if hot water is expelled, that radiator is done. Close the valve and move onto the next one.
By the way...Why is your boiler running in the summer?
It should be shut down to save you money.
your central heating pump is not switching off this should be controlled by your room stat try turning it down or if you can unplug the pump if you have motorised valves the heating one might be stuck open you can move the lever at the back of the valem manualy to the closed position
most common fault with the suprimas are the printed circuit boar (pcb) going. these are quite pricey. phone up potterton,, they may send you one free of charge!!
if its not the pcb, then it sounds like your piping is wrong, there should be a bypass fitted, between the pump and motorised valve(s).
i wouldnt attempt either job yourself, first of all call potterton, see if theyll give you a replacement pcb, then call in an engineer to do the job.
good luck.
try turning down the running temperature a bit. it may just be tripping out on over temp. another tip if that does not work is to make sure you have a least 1 bar pressure? if not top the water up until it is between 1 bar and 1.5 bar. 9common problems).
