A.C. Won't Work?
Question:my ac won't work even if we have the right fuses (house built in 1950's), The Thermostat is right, the Conditioner outside pluged in but it still dosen't run! it dosen't seem that it is getting power from the house so when i change the temp or turn the fan on it dose nothing! the outside fuses are not blown and the power to the conditioner is still on. we did have a problem with the fuses dounstairs this winter and the water heaters didn't work. could this be a factor to whats not making my ac work? Nice pictures. The problem is with A/C a picture is NOT worth a thousand words.
Well you should verify power at all equipment first. You need 220V at the outdoor unit and usually 120V at the indoor unit. Make sure the power is on at the contacts of the outdoor unit and at the circuit board of the indoor unit.
Once you determine you have power you need to check control wires. The best way to test control wire is to jump them at the indoor unit. Touch the red (24v power) with the green or blue (blower) if the blower comes on then you know you have power.
I would then check the thermostat to see if it is working. If it is not then the problem is either the stat wire or the stat.
I except email if you need more info.
most outdoor a/c units within just a few feet is a breaker or fuse switch make sure it is not off or blown if that is OK remove the outer door on the unit and with a voltage tester make sure you have 240 v across the incoming line on the power relay. if you do than it might be a bad relay take a screwdriver on top of the relay or a small wood stick and press the contacts down if the unit fires up than its ether that relay or the thermostat not signaling the relay to engage. and of course check the breaker in your panel to make sure its not tiped and with the voltage tester remove the panel cover and check the load side of the breaker should have 240 with the breaker on But if you dont know about electrical devices please get a electrican!!
With the panel cover off with same tester, test the main incomeing wires from your meter should be around 240v look at`the wires and make sure non are or look like they have been hot.
remove the a/c breaker and look at where the breaker plugs on the buss of the panel check back area of breaker and see if its burned or has been hot (heat)
