Cost of labor to replace air compressor?
Question:Good news, bad new for us. Our AC has basically gone out, but according to the service guy who came out to look this afternoon the compressor, which needs replaced, is still under warrenty. Bad news, labor isn't included in that.
He gave us a quote of $600 to do the labor. We're going to call around local places & get other quotes, but being the weekend & a holiday weekend at that we can't really do that for a couple days. So being curious & wondering if we have to come up with around $600, I was wondering if anyone had knowledge of how much installing an air compressor can run. Thanks in advance.
Answers:
It depends a great deal on where you are. Prices vary particularly on labor from area to area. Another thing to consider is the quality of workmanship. If a compressor is shoddily installed, you will soon have difficulties again. You do not say if the $600. included new filter/driers for the refrigerant lines, or use of a vacuum pump and recovery equipment. I never installed a compressor in or out of warranty without new filter/driers, and there is always a certain amount of refrigerant needed to top the job off. All of these things mentioned involve expense on the contractors part because all the manufacturer is going to do is supply a new compressor. I think your time would be best spent calling friends, neighbors, co workers on the job, relatives and trying to find a company that has worked for them and whom they would recommend. Call those companies for a price after the weekend. I always had a package price. It included everything needed for the job and the labor. Make sure that is what you will be getting to avoid "surprises". I hope I have been of some help to you.
Since it is under warranty, you will have to call companies that handle the same brand as yours. Some dealers are exclusive distributors of only one or two brands and would not be able to get you the "free" repair part. $600 sounds a little high just for labor and materials, but you failed to say where you were located. Make sure the filter & dryer are replaced at the same time. I'd call and get 3 price quotes (not estimates) and make sure that you use a reputable company-ask for references.
Hope this helps!
