Need more details. Is this a field for the liquids from a septic tank? What is the construction of the leach field? What is a title 5?
In any event, I doubt if your water softener did it. More likely it is a result of solids getting into the field. This could be due to a septic tank without a baffle which would allow solids to pass into the field.
