Hvac question?

Question:i have a 4 speed blower for a trane XB-80 unit. how do i swith the leads to turn up the speed. is it the wider they go the faster the speed? it blows cold air but there is hardly any pressure i have enough freon so i think my bloer speed is too low.

Answers:
If you are savvy enough; check the wiring diagram that is in the maintenance booklet for the unit. if you don't have that, its inside the cover /lid of the blower. It will show you the terminal designation and placement of each blower speed and how to switch them. Frankly, its unlikely that it needs to happen as most come set up in cooling mode at mid-high or high speed. in heat they are switched to med. speed or mid-high depending on many different accessories. When you pop the cover of blower you will shut off power to unit by means of a fan/blower switch; however YOU should kill it at dis-connect switch to be safe. again, I will guess that a plugged filter, or some thing else may be the problem... Good Luck!

Turn the thermostat to a setting where your cooling is off. Turn the thermostat fan selector to on. This is the fan in high speed. Turn your thermostat to call for heat. The fan should slow down when the heat activates. This is low speed.
Was your blower working last cooling season?
The schematic on the motor will show the speeds for your blower. Be sure that you do not energize more than one speed at a time, or you will be buying a new motor (you will burn the windings). It could be a relay is not providing power to the unit in high speed.
Unless you have a set of gauges to measure refrigerant levels you can't be certain the levels are proper. If the fan doesn't seem to be pushing enough air, You may have a bad blower capacitor. You will need a meter that measures micro-ferrets to check this. Turn off power disconnect wires to capacitor and put leads on both tabs. It should read the rating that is marked on the capacitor. Or you may actually have a weak motor, a plugged evaporator coil, or a dirty filter. Any of these situations though will cause the coil to freeze up. Ultimately this one may be best suited for a technician,
by changing the blower speed might not solve problem, you might want to look at your air filter and clean your air ducts, usually if it was wired like that you should leave it alone.
