My central AC fan stopped working yesterday?
Question:It's hot outside. It's a 3-day weekend. Every AC business I've contacted is either closed for the weekend or doesn't provide this service.
I have an 8-year-old house with what looks like a fairly new AC unit. Yesterday, the large fan unit outside started making a high-pitch squeal noise, then stopped working. When I turn the AC on inside, it makes the noises as if it's working, but the fan doesn't spin.
It's a GE unit, not sure if that helps.
I thought maybe something just got stuck in it, but I didn't see anything inside other than the usual dust that gathers.
Is it broken? Does the fan need to be replaced? Or is there something I can do to fix it? It's really random the way it happened, it's been working fine since we got this house, we've lived here a year, it worked perfect last year and this year as well up until yesterday, when it all of a sudden started making those squealing noises and just stopped spinning.
It's hot outside. I'm sad. Help!

i would say its dead.. maybe a bearing locked up. try spinning it with your fingers.. it shouldnt be tight.. you might try to oil the hell out of it.
sounds like the motor on your fan seized up. i assume its the one hanging down inside the outside unit. u might see if one of the home depot stores carries the replacement motor. its pretty easy to put in just match up the wires as they came off the old one. i dont know how your fan blades are attached to your motor but i would guess its an allan set screw. u might need a second body to help you hold something but i know i did it all by myself. no special tools other than a socket set and a couple of screwdrivers. make sure u kill that circuit breaker. good luck.
motors dead has to be replaced
We had the same problem over this weekend and caught hold of an AC technician. He had to replace the capacitor and it started working immediately.
