New ceiling fan was working, then stopped working--now working again?
Question:We installed a new ceiling fan last year where an existing one was. We used the existing wire that was there--and had no problem following instructions with hooking it up. It worked great for about 3 months. Then suddenly it stopped working about six months ago. Today my husband was sitting in the living room and he said it all of the sudden turned on. It and the light function of it are working properly (we are able to turn it off and on normally, and it's speed is normal). Why would it do that? We thought originally it had shorted out--and were waiting until we could afford an electrician. Could a short fix it's self like that?
Answers:
I would check the connections inside of the fan before contacting an electrician. Chances are that the connections inside of the wire nuts vibrated loose and aren't getting a good connection. It is easy enough to do yourself and only takes an hour tops. I would turn off all power to the fan. Get a tall step ladder and get comfortable. Remove two of the holding screws located at the base of the fan. loosen the remaining two screws and be very careful not to drop them as they are very tiny. Twist the base a little bit to free the base from the ceiling, hang the base from hook onto any of the solid screw holes and this will free up both of your hands to check the connections. Once the connections are checked and secured, reverse the process and you are back in the comfort zone! You don't even have to remove the blades! Good luck.
loose wire nut or other loose connection
yes it may 'fix itself' but any loose connection is dangerous
shut off power and check connections
also, cut bare ends off and re-strip them as they may be corroded causing that problem
Probably a loose connection. Vibration could have moved it around just enough to get it to make contact again. I would pull the fan and check the connections. If nothing is obvious, take all of the connections loose and do them over.
sounds like you ahve electrical short some where, isolate it, but kicking the breaker, take it down and check the wires, make sure all are tight and secured properly, then put back up
could be a loose wire that needs reconnected or the fan may need a little WD 40...and make sure the button is all the way up or down on the side if it is reverisable..
Yes if one or more of the connectors is loose the vibrations from the fan can further loosen wire nuts. another vibration ie. atruck going by hard wind.could allow the electrical path to reestablish. turn off your circuit and tighten all the connectors
make sure the ground is connected (green or bare wire)
also if the wall switch is old you should replace it easily done with the circuit off and cheap
Dont think I would wait to get a electrician to have it checked out , may save you a house fire! Which could happen if wiring is shorting out, which seems to be so.
hello
Try checking the electrical connections one of the wires is loose on the fan or on the switch that operates it
