How to clear a dirty green Swimming pool?

Question:My above ground swmming pool has been filthy for the past 2 years. Every spring when we open it up, the water is clear, but the bottom is COVERED with dirt / maybe alge? And when we put the sweeper in, it stirs all that dirt on the bottom up and the water gets very dirty/green looking. We have a brand new Sand filter, please someone help!

Answers:
I had the exact same problem. I tried "shocking" the pool...it turned the green stuff clear but never got rid of it...and it turned green again very quickly.

Most of these above ground pools don't have very good filters on them. If you have to use a sweeper that you attach a hose to--right off the bat that's a crappy pool to buy.

I suggest just emptying it out, cleaning it up and refilling it, then making sure you keep it covered when it's not in use. That's really the best way. You can never clean up that sludge on the bottom once it's there...above ground pools are a major pain in the butt to maintain, but you have to do it otherwise it's nothing more than an unattractive sludge pond.

After 2 yrs...you'll have to drain and start over or scrub the hell outta the bottom with a brush (sold at pool stores).
Be sure you use plenty of chlorine and "shock" it as necessary
Once you get it clear you can buy test strips that will tell you what your pool is missing. You need to maintain the proper PH levels to keep your pool clear. Keeping it clear is alot more work than you would think...obviously
Slowly, slowly, like a snail slow vacuum it. That's dead algae on the bottom. Than let the filter run all night, wash the filter out ,(a big job but if ou don't you wont have any luck) than run it over night again. be sure to add proper chlorine to the water.Bye
Use the water vacuum. ~
SHOCK IT, take a clean bottle and fill it with the pool water and stop by any pool supply and they will test your water for free and give you what you need to shock the pool and keep it clear. Make sure you measure the pool first for they will know how many gallons of water to treat. HAVE FUN IN THE POOL :)

If it has been green for 2 years you will have to drain all the water out, clean the pool and refill it. Then add the proper chemicals to keep it clear
First the "PH" of the water needs to be in control. Test the waters pH and make corrective measures, and then a good algae-side should bring the water back to clear. Chlorine is only a part of the clear water regime, the PH is the most important part! For algae grows best then the water is to acid or alkaline.
Most any good home center can help with information, charts, and chemicals to keep you in the "Clear" all summer!
you know that even if no one is in the pool it still has to be kelp clean or drain it... in the winter turn on the pump and add the rigth chemicals add water til ...full. you could stir it up and let it over run thru where the filter hooks up at but. do that before you add your stuff... next year drain it cover it cleaning will be a lot easier next time if you just do that
Using a filter without chemicals isn't going to help much. I would suggest taking a water sample to a pool supply store. They will do an analysis, give you instructions and sell you the products needed to get rid of the algae and stabilize the water. They are a wealth of information.

An above ground pool was already installed in a home we bought 13 years ago. The prior owner had used chlorine based products. We chose to use chlorine free Baquacil and still do. We vacuum the pool daily, brush the sides, if needed, and clean the filter twice a season. We take a water sample every two weeks for analysis. We have rarely had a problem keeping the water sparkling clear.
We can get your pool looking sparkling clean again and keep it that way, but it will take some time investment on your part.

Take a sample of the pool water down to your local pool store and then email me the results at robandliz1992@yahoo.com I will put together a maintenance schedule for you and will also give you a shopping list for chemicals to balance your pool and kill off the algae.
