If it is cedar or a treated pine it really needs no treatment ... they will both weather to a silver gray and look very nice ... less maintenance for you
use a weather proof paint designed to be used outside, like one of the selleys paints.
they can be bought in heaps of colours, and can make cheap wood look like very expensive wood.
i think there is a red cedar paint even!
