Home Door lock does not make you unlock knob from the inside to open the door. Getting Locked outside.?

Question:We just purchased a new home. I bought some new locks, but the stupid bottom knob locks do not make you unlock the bottom lock from the inside before leaving the house (i.e., regardless of whether the door is locked from the outside, the door knob will turn from the inside and remain locked when the door is closed behind you). You guessed it. . .kids run out the door and get locked outside b/c they don't think to stop to check and see if the door knob is in the locked feature.

Is there any way to turn this feature off? If not, any manufacturers that don't come with this "feature."

Answers:
Your lock has the wrong function for your use. You need what's called an entrance lock. Your present lock is known as either a hotel lock or a store room lock. The only way to correct it is to remove the present lock and replace it with one having the correct function. Someone at a decent haerdware store can sell you the right lock, and possibly even at one of tyhe big box discount home stores.

There are tons. The only way to be sure is go to someplace like Home Depot where they have the demos mounted and try them out.
Most locks won't lock you in, it's a safety feature in case of fire, you need to be able to get out in a hurry without unlocking the door. Bathroom locks pop out after you twist the knob to unlock when you turn the handle. Try a lock smith, they will give you more options. Good luck
that is designed for safety
i had the same years back and just scraped them
kwik set does not do this
P S to greenie,
these locks I had were labeled entry locks and they did the same thing
i forget the maker but it was just another sales pitch and they did not stay on the shelf long

I would give the 10 to Bart,, I think he has it
Let me guess, hummmm you have Schlage locks?
That is a common problem that I have heard over the last 25 years! Unfortunately there is no fix to your dilemma, only replacement to another brand like Kwikset. The big problem there is the keyways are not compatible. You will have one key for the knobset, and a separate key for the deadbolt. Unless you change both the deadbolt and doorknob, then you could have one key convenience.
I suggest Dexter locks. They are very good quality and will perform the way that you described...that you would like
them to.
No, there is nothing you can do but replace them with a different lock or knob. If you have dead bolts locks to secure the house, I'd suggest replacing the lock knobs with passage knobs. That way you can still secure the home but cannot accidentally lock the door behind you. I had your problem and followed my own advice.
The lock is definitely either malfunctioning or the wrong lock type. The lock needs to be replaced.
I got the same type of lock I HATE IT TOO . its for if there is a fire and your not fumbling to unlock it .
Let me guess! "Schlage"
It`s a good device. Maybe what you need to do is slow the kids down and educate them on the operation. (and hide a key outside)
Hey! Sometimes it`s a good thing when kids get locked out.
