Question about gas tank exchange (for grilling)?

Question:We inherited an old grill and an old rusty looking tank. I want to get rid of both. I'm ok with giving away the grill, but I'm worried that the tank could be dangerous. Can I take it to one of those 'blue rino' places? Would they give me anything for it (if I don't want to exchange/buy another tank)? What does one do with suspicious-looking half-filled propane tanks anyway? Thanks!

Answers:
Propane gas is relatively harmless when released into the atmosphere, either burned or unburned. The contents of a full 5 gallon tank are at most 20#, this one more likely less than 1#. If the tank is heavy, put an ad on Freecycle. Somebody will have a use for the propane. If it is empty, take it to the Blue Rhino place first for convenience, if they don't want it, they will tell you where you can dispose of the tank. About five to seven years ago, the nozzles on the tanks were changed, and B.R. may not take it back now.
If the tank is questionable, the refiller is obligated to pressure test the vessel every five years. If it looks unserviceable, they will dispose of the tank.

I had a tank from 1969. I gave it to the place where they exchange tanks. I don't know what they did with it, but I assume they refurbished it and used it again.
You can try taking it back to a "blue rino place" and if they will not take it back call or go by city dump and they can take it off your hands.I know they will in FW if you are a resident, proof that you live their.
