Our offices' fluorescent bulbs have spots on them-looks like mold spores.bldg mgmt says this is normal,is it?
Question:The spots look like mold spores - the bldg maintenance man says they are 'arc weld' spots. Soulds kinda plausable but I've never noticed them before.
Answers:
old fluorescent bulbs develop dark spots at the bulb ends corresponding to deterioration of the cathodes.
New light tubes will fix the problem, but usually isn't done until the light burns out.
Oh for the love of Pete . I'm glad you don't work in my building.
Mold requires water to grow. I doubt there is water getting on the electrical fixtures. You might have too much spare time on your hands if all you have to do is stare at the lights.
Those black spots are on the inside of the tube and it is normal.
Time to replace the lamps.
