How to secure basement windows...?

Question:I am moving from a second floor condo to a first floor condo. I am used to having my windows open at night for fresh air and feeling quite safe. Now going into this larger first floor unit I know I won't be able to leave the windows open at night. (I live in a large metro area). But, I am also concerned about the basement windows. They are about 1.5 foot high and quite wide. Plus they are surrounded on the outside by a window "well". Any suggestions on what I can do to prevent anyone from gaining entry into my home via these windows? Other than 3 rottweilers in the basement!! Just my daughter and myself will be living there. I have cut dowels for the windows upstairs so they cannot be forced open...any security suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

You can now buy expandable, locking bars to fit over the interior side of your windows. They attach to the studs or cement in your wall and lock on the inside. The good ones have a hinge and a latch so you can undo them from the inside quickly in case of a fire.

yes, nail a small board above the window so it can't be raised or screw the window down. Just a broom handle secured to the top against the frame and window will not let anyone open it. There are several ways. You can srew it down at the top with a long screw and leave some sticking out so it son't raise or scre ot to the frame or at bottom.
First I would paint the windows with frosty spray paint or cover them with curtains so no one can see in, that way they won*t know for sure what is inside.
Secondly; Have some metal rods cut to fit the windows just like the ones you cut out of wood. You can force them to fit either sideways or up and down, whichever is best for you
I would make two or three for each window.
Then hang bells or stack cans in the windows so if someone does try to get in it will make lots of noise. Then put a coupld of beware of dog signs out side, or even in each basement window.
