Ideally you need to determine what exactly is causing the damp. Could be anything, likely old windows or certain exposed parts of your walls. Having had the same problem myself a couple of years ago, dehumidifiers do help a lot. You can get a couple of good dehumidifiers from Argos for about the £70-80 range mark each. They will be worth their salt and are a good short-term measure, they would collect about 4 litres of water (dampness moisture every day). Good luck!
First you need to stop whatever is creating the damp. Could be leaking gutters, old or broken damp course etc etc.
Once the damp won't get anyworse open all the windows and doors, get plenty of air into the house and move furniture away from the walls.
If mould is also a problem you can buy sprays for this or paint bleach onto the walls, if you don't mind white walls.
If you have air vents in yr window open them and you should see alot of improvment within days.
If you're talking about getting rid of dampness in home, get damp rid at Walmart.
