Main breaker won't stay on?

Question:We flipped the main breaker in our house to the off position. When we go to flip it back on it's very easy to move and nothing happens when it's on the ON side. Is there any way it needs to be reset? We've flipped it all the way to the off position already.

The power is currently out due to a storm if that makes any difference.

Answers:
You probably need to replace the main breaker. You can try flipping it on and off a few times but if it won't stay on, it's broken. They don't always last forever.---If you replace it yourself, I suggest pulling your meter out of socket. This way you don't have to work with live wires coming in. Call your power company asap and explain the reason. They will support your intentions of not working with live cables.

If the power is out how do you know it`s not working? How are you using your computer if the power is out?
that little nib is for a lock

reet until it clicks
It is always easier to put a breaker back into the on position than it is to off, usually. (I should know, I have to flip breakers all the time where I live).

Yes, the power being currently off will make a difference. As long as the breaker makes a little click and stays in the "on" position, it should be fine. But of course, with no power running through it, you don't know if it will trip itself again when the power comes back on. I would assume, though, since you said you flipped it off yourself, that there is nothing wrong with it. Just wait for the power to come back on. Everything should work fine.
