How do I make a swail ditch?

Question:I know it is a ditch of sorts that goes around or along side of my house- but do I leave it open? Do I put in a culvert? What are the steps involved and what supplies do I need?

Answers:
a swail ditch is left open its a very simple ditch to move water.all you need is a shovel (maybe a level also) depending on how much water you need to move try 1 shovel depth and width and as long as it needs to be to get the water away from the house.10,20,30 feet what ever you needin the length at first to see if that works. if not then make it wider or you can make it wider and less deep if your going to have to walk acrossed it. wider and less deep will be less of a chance of tripping, and make sure it flows away from the house preferably to the street depending on where and how your house sits

The "swail" or "swale" is simply the grading of the property to encourage water to flow away from the foundation. A swale ditch is usually at the lowest point of the swale to further redirect thr water --usually to some sort of drainage. It can be a plain ditch or a channel with pipe (often "orangeberg" with holes on the top) covered with gravel or some other porous filler to allow water to flow into the ditch and thus away.
