What is the least tons needed in an AC to cool a 1700 sq. ft. house?

Question:

Answers:
My best guess would be 3 ton. You really need an estimate that includes windows and doors and other things that would allow air to escape or temps to be increased by the sun.

rule of thumb i a 1,000 sq. ft. to 1 ton. but the other answer is also correct in addition to taking in to account the direction windows are facing. or if you have vaulted ceilings. also, the insulation used in your attic and in your walls. even the r-factor of the windows and doors can have an extreme effect if they are old and leaky on windy or cold days. so the answer would be 2 tons.
what you need is a heat gain/loss analysis done on your home...this will tell you what you need.usually though this will equal out to 500 to 750 sq ft per ton...3 tons would be the least in my estimate
