Septic Tank Question.?
Question:We have bought a piece of land with a previously installed septic tank and drain lines. This was used previously, but has not been used for about 4 years. We are now installing a new trailer onto the land and will be hooking into the septic system. Is there anything we need to do prior to using the septic system? Should it be pumped prior to us using the system?
Any input would be helpful?

You should probably fill it with drano and then use a butane torch against it.
Yes it needs to pumped and it would be a good idea to check the lines for corrosion, leaks etc. before running it for real.
My hubby says if it were him he would have it pumped out first..Wouldn't hurt to start from a new system just to avoid any problems in the future. And of course always use RIDX once a month!!!
I think that pumping the septic tank would be a good idea, and also when you get it emptied I would try running a snake through the lateral lines to make sure they are not blocked since the lines have been dry for 4 years. Might be a good investment and keep from causing problems in the future.
Get some rid-X and read instructions once you have new trailer plumbing hooked up. Also ask your local plumber company what should you do before hooking up. Never herd of using Drano and fire? Don't trust that one.
Pump it and have an expert come to check it out. Make sure it is still in good condition. Hopefully no cracks. They will also sanitize it so that you do not have any future problems.
should not be a budget buster. But good preventative measure.
Ok. You really should have the system tested. The tank is, in all probability, fine. It's the drain field that you should be concerned about. After years of having not been used, it could easily be filled with roots, silt or both. Call your local "honey wagon"* guy and have him check it.

i use to help pump out septic tanks you will need find and dig up the lid so you can look in if it has not been used for about 4 years you need to check for roots in the tank and in the drain lines and check the over all looks of the tank by that i mean no cracks in the walls or the lid you dug up hope that helped you
First have the tank pumped out. Whoever you get to do this will wash it out and check the condition of the tank. The drain field lines should also be checked to make sure that they can still flow properly (not filled with sludge, roots, etc.) If you are going to use existing lines from the trailer to the tank, the same people who do you pumping can flush those lines with a high pressure water snake to make sure they are clear and free-running.
(just a note about Rid-X-it won't hurt to use it, but according to all the experts the amount of bacteria (which is what eats away at the waste in the tank) that it adds is minimal compared to what will form in a properly operating system. You may want to save that money)
Hope this helps!
