Why is a red cedar fence better than a white wood fence?
Question:I'm looking into replacing my fence and all the estimates i am getting talk about red cedar. I was trying to see why the red cedar would be better fencing than the white wood I have now.
Answers:
the red cedar is a harder wood and tolerates the elements better than the soft wood of the white you already ahve. It also doesn't show the weathered look near as bad like white wood does.
Cedar is more expensive to buy but requires much less maintenance.
The only difference in the two cedars is the color. Both are the same as far as strength, texture and durability. If you are comparing red (or white ) cedar to another hardwood, go with the cedar for the reasons above.
In CA, it is because red cedar resists bugs, weathers better in our extreme temperatures and it smells great when it is new.
Red cedar is water and bug resistant. It can be installed as is and last quite a while. Do put another coat of water-proofing on it to be safe. It also looks brighter with a coat of water-proofing on. good luck!!
Red cedar lasts a little longer and does better against rain and moisture
I think cedar will probably last longer.
Red cedar, like it`s cousin Redwood, has natural oils and resins that deter rot from insects and weather. It`s that simple. (one trivia fact..contrary to popular belief, true cedar does not grow in the U.S...The ones we have here are junipers). Have a nice day!.
western red cedar is naturally rot resistant.
it is also weaker than other woods so it is not often used for structural items like fence posts or house framing.
when we build cedar fences with cedar 2x4's I use three stringers instead of two... or I upgrade to two 2x6's
since all wood is second or third growth ( low quality ) these days I like three stringers to minimize warping and twisting of the finished product.
red cedar is easier to maintain than white wood
