Which is the proper way to add shock to a pool?
Question:Should I pour it through the skimmers, or add directly to the pool water? What are the pros & cons of both ways? (Inground Pool, approx 10,000 gallons)
Answers:
It really depends on what type you're using. Some should not be spread over the surface (if it is granular) because it may not dissolve quickly enough to avoid bleaching. Some shocks, such as fast-dissolving calcium hypochlorite and lithium-based shocks will dissolve much more quickly and will normally be OK to sprinkle over the pool surface. (The advantage here being slightly quicker dispersion throughout the water: but keep an eye out for any that doesn't dissolve before the bottom.) Liquid can really be done either way... but in any case, make sure the pump is running.) Also, in any case, it's best to check label instructions.
The only real disadvantage (or problem) with putting granular shocks through the skimmers is the possibility of it reacting with chlorine tablets (usually in automatic chlorinators). If just a little gets into the chlorinator, you can probably kiss the chlorinator goodbye (in other words, "boom"). I've had customers bring in what was left of the chlorinator after this happened: not much... Also, remove any chlorine tablets fron the skimmer if you use them that way...
The concentrated chlorine level in the skimmer is usually not an issue, because it is only for a very short time; all the water rushing through there disperses it quickly.
I add mine directly to the water spreading it in small quantities as the package recommends. You may want to check with your local pool supply store and see what they say. I may switch to the following methodology http://www.wikihow.com/shock-your-swimmi... as it looks like I could be damaging my liner if it settles before dissolving. I think running it through the skimmer intake would cause some of it to be absorbed in the filter itself as it could attach to any debris on the filter.
Either method is fine. The difference is, by pouring directly into the pool, it's going where you want it immediately, whereas if you pour it through the skimmers, it'll go through pumps and main filter first. No real pros or cons there.
Balance the PH and add quick dissolving shock to the deep end of the pool with the pump running. Stay out of the pool until the chlorine levels come back down to about 3-5 ppm. You don't want undissolved granules going through the pump.
I use liquid shock. Just pour it directly in the water. If you use the powder, then dissolve it in a bucket of water before putting it in the pool. This will prevent bleaching of the liner from undissolved shock.
Do not pour it directly into the skimmer. The product I use comes in 1lb bags. I cut the top of the bag off and spread the product into the pool near the jets so it gets distributed. My pool is 11,000 gallons in-ground.
