This happens when I take the ivy of my house - leave it for a week or two and it will dry out, then use a hard bristle brush to brush it off!
I just jerked a bunch off my house, the roots will die, til next year.
what a night-mare, you can dig it out which is not easy, or ask at the Garden centre what substance you can buy to kill it off.
We just dug one out, it was wrecking the brick work, but next door has still got one in, hope it doesn't grow over to us and we are a terrace property
spray or paint it with a solution of bleech and salt water.hand full of salt and a cup full of bleech to a pint of warm water
Let nature take it's course. If the root has been severed from the main stem at ground level the aerial "roots" which are anchoring filaments only will eventually die. Trying to be too enthusiastic could cause the faces of the bricks to be pulled off leaving ugly scars on the wall.
If it is still growing leaves you have to pick it off. Dont ruin the mortar if it is too deep. Then you will have to spray to kill it. Garden center will advise ...probably something like SBK.
I used a blow torch to dry and singe the stuff.
Then it came off with a wire brush
Should add normal beware warning when using blowtorch
I used a combination of apple cider vinegar (8 percent) and three teaspoons of sea salt, mixed in a gallon of warm water and sprayed over the ivy. In two to three days, depending upon how hot the weather is, it will dry up and begone. It will not return the following year, or any year thereafter.
This unique combination also removes the root scaring left on the surface, but I would also recommend using a brush to help this process along.
Hope this helps solve your problems.
Two ideas. You can buy a product from a Garden centre salled "Tumbleweed" which may kill it off or soak the roots with a strong bleach. Dig around the roots first then pour in the bleach. You may have to do this a few times but it will kill off the roots.
pour a load of roundup over the roots.read and follow instructions carefully.goodluck,lynn.
