use Purple power don't add water to it put it on there heavy and let it set for about 10 to 15 minutes then use a scrubing brush and if that don't work use a wire brush...You can get purple power at auto parts stores...or you can use gunk its for cleaning motors...it works too...even oven cleaner will work...
do not use the oven cleaner on the grill, it will eat the paint right off of it ! any kind of degreaser will leave a nasty taste in your food so you dont want to do that either. best thing there is is that wire brush and water to rinse it out sorry just takes allot of work
This won't help you now, but a really good way to clean an iron grill is to place it in a self cleaning oven. You could also lay it in a bed of coals produced by a camp fire. The idea is to get it red hot, and the grime and crud will burn or pop right off. Touch it up with a wire brush and you are ready to go.
A light coat of cooking spray will keep it from rusting once it is clean.
