Leather sofas versus angry cats?

Question:My 2 cats took instant dislikes to my leather sofas. Any suggestions for deterrents BUT at this late stage any suggestions on how to repair/minimise the appearance of shredded claw marks?

Answers:
Hi i rubbed mine with orange peel . They hate the smell of the oil in the peel and they have never been near it since.cheers

Get cats claws surgically removed - wax the leather
They didn't like the smell of the leather.
Try rubbing in Dubbin,it is used to improve the leather of shoes so might help.
Impossible task I think. I have leather too and 3 cats. It was 1 day old before the first scratch. Now I'm just learning to live with it!

I am experimenting using a plant spray and misting the furniture with lavender essential oil, which they hate, but I dunno what effect it's having on the leather in the long term.

All I can say is, "Best of British Luck To You" and if you find something that really works, PLEASE let me know! lol.
How do you know your cats are "angry"? I've had cats for years and they sharpen their claws on a regular basis. That doesn't mean their "angry". I have found several ways that work to deter them from using my furniture for scratching posts. First, get them their own scratching post. Sold at pet stores or walmart. Second get a spray bottle of water(just water, nothing can have been in the bottle before). Every time you catch them trying to scratch your furniture, give them a squirt. They will soon learn it's a nono. You have to be consistent though. You can't do it just when it's convenient for you. You have to be able to be home most the time. You could also try cage training them when you are away. Or shutting them in another room when you are away.
first of all, lock up your cats in a cage, the little menaces! lol

im not sure how you can dusguise a claw mark on your furniture, to tell you the truth. you may have to get somebody in, who can maybe patch up the area with some addtional material. maybe you can get a spray which will act as a detterant for your cats.

ok, i think you should get a stratching post for you cat, or maybe a ball, etc, that they ca scrath at. and i suggets you follow the advise above in a previous post, about spraying the cats with water everytime they attempt to stratch your furniture. they will so get the message, hopefully!
Keep their claws clipped and filed frequently and the orange peal DOES work, as he was saying.
Train your cats to behave. We have leather furniture, and two cats. We taught them to respect our furniture. Use a spray bottle, and water, combined with a firm shout "NO".
cat rid of your cats and buy a new soffa , out with the old in with the new
i think you mean 'angry sofa owner' versus ' happy cats'. lol
get them a scratching post and whack em if they touch the sofa
who gave this a bad vote?
if you dont whack em they aint going to learn
Hi there,

Yes the above responses are correct orange peel or any kind of citrus peel will deterr your cats from the leather sofa and it smells lovely too! Also if you catch your cats in the act spray them with a little water not the mist the squirty stuff, or you could put pepper around the dont like the grittyness on their paws and when they lick it off it will be hot and they wont go back on the pepper again! I dont do this as it could e tin my cats eyes and burn them but double sided sticky tape could have the same effect they dont like the stickyness in their paws so stick some sellotape on the sofa, or get your cats a leather scratching pole surrounded with treats and catnip they love it! Please dont get them declawed.
Hope some of these tips helped you,
regards,
Lotty.
add some lemon scented oil to your leather cleaner this usually works to keep the cats away .sorry cant help with the claw marks
Try finding a piece of a tree branch that is drift-wood and lean it in the corner of the room.Needs to be drift wood tho...find an upholsterer that does piece work and fill ins. Most will give free estiments on cost.
Cats and leather do not mix. (You have probably already found that out though) If the scratches are not deep you can use Murphys Oil soap to try and clean and massage the scratch. (Remember leather is the skin of a cow or what ever type of animal.and it is much more forgiving than vynal (sp?))

For the future it is best to keep the cats away from the leather furniture. (good Luck with that!) There are repellant sprays that you can spray on the leather which discourages cats from going there. Maybe you should spray around the sofa so they don't even want to get near it.
I use a spray bottle filled with water to discourage our cat from shredding our sofa. It really works. It is a pain for a while but your cats will get the message.

About the sofa, maybe a sofa cover will do.
You can have the front claws removed. That is probably the best solution.
