Rotten egg smell coming from hot water?
Question:The cold water works fine, but the hot water has a rotten egg smell and sometimes comes out looking blackish. We have a new water heater, only 2 years old. Any suggestions?
Answers:
I was told this condition is a result of excessive iron in the water, which collects on a part of the water softener, inhibiting its ability to soften the water, and remove the smell.
Now, be aware (if you have a well) that sometimes sulfer smell comes and goes, as underground water sources break open actual pockets of sulfer, or flow across places that have more or less iron in them.
do not drink any of the water or cook with it.eggs smells are usually sulfur.maybe a water main busted. call the water dept qand have them check it out.
If it's a gas heater you might want to talk with the gas company. They'll check it out for free.
You might just have sulfured water. It's kind of old school, but I think some places still do it.
Well, I do sometimes have the same smell, but I found that after a while it goes away. I'm not sure about the blackish color...
It could be that if you very rural areas, some dirt or earth gets through, but I'd check with a professional if the problem persists...
You have water coming from the well. You need to get a water line attacted to your house so the wather can come from a cleaner source.
Smells like you have sulfur in the water.
It most likely is sulfur as was mentioned before and more shows up more when the water is heated. One very important thing you did not mention and the others did not think of it is: Are you on a private well ? If so you may have a shallow well and have to go deeper as you could be picking up ground water. Have the water tested and check on the depth of the well. I have a feeling this is your problem due to the fact you didn't mention that other people are having the same problem.
most likely your water supply contain too much sulphur.
