Answers:
The unit is outside, but the part where you would find the filter is inside. My filter is inside the furnace part. There are two covers on the outside of the furnace. They just lift up and off. At the very bottom and on the side is the filter. To replace it just go to any home depot and purchase the same size filter as the old one. Better yet, buy several and change them about once a month. It will help your home smell better, reduce the amount of dust inside and is more efficient ... saving you money on your electric bill.
Generally speaking you need to remove and replace the filter, or if you have a lifetime filter you need to clean it. You'll be amazed at the difference. If you still experience the smell after working the filter over, calla pro.
You need to clean the a coil and check the drain pan in the bottom of the a coil, might be holding water, which in turn, will cause slime, which in turn will call spores, and make ya sick. If you have the money, buy an ultraviolet air cleaner. this baby sticks into your return air duct work. just cut a hole, screw , and plug in. this will make sure you have no airborne nastiest that will make ya sick. this will also clean up that constant, smell you have, they are about a hundred bucks, about a 15 minute job.
Clean the filter or replace it. You can spray it with a room deodorizer and clear up the whole house. Get your cooling coil cleaned and make sure the drain on the drip pan is clear.
