How do I add/restore permanent shine to a 50's diner table top?

Question:The finish was dulled a few years ago when a family member used a chemical solvent to remove splattered paint. The tabletop was a beautiful, bright red. Now, the only time it looks normal is when it is wet. Is there some type of shine or finish I can use to restore the shine?

Answers:
Go to your grocery store and purchace some Holiday House floor restorer. I use it on my vinyl and wood floors and it is amazing! (It's also CHEAP!)

A good paste wax (like they use on cars) should do a good job as well.

Good luck!

Try some bee wax or Old English Oil. I think you can buy those in the DIY store or stores that sell antique furniture...however, I dont think that this will solve your problem permantly as the surface top might have been badly damaged by the solvent previously used.. but it should give you a better looking table top when you applied the oil or the wax.
The very best solution is varnish used on boats. It will shine like a mirror and last a lifetime. Not easy, but worth the effort.
Go to a marine supply store and explain. They'll direct you.
Maybe talk to an auto body shop about having a laquer/clearcoat sprayed onto it. They will know what finish is compatible with the lamimate.... probably won't cost TOO much...and a professional finish
Just an idea!!

Good luck
